| Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) is a medical condition that occurs when cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) accumulates in the brain due to irregular flow through the brain's ventricular system. The cardinal symptoms of NPH are dementia, gait instability and urinary incontinence. Because these symptoms can be mistaken for Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease, NPH is often misdiagnosed. These symptoms can improve following the ion of a shunt that diverts CSF from the brain to the abdominal cavity for clearance from the body.
Dr. St. Louis has been working with Florida Hospital Orlando to develop a more efficient method to diagnose and care for NPH patients. He spearheaded the creation of a multi-disciplinary diagnostic team composed of neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, physical therapists and other allied health professionals that collaborate to evaluate, diagnose and treat NPH patients. As part of this NPH Program, patients are hospitalized for three days while a small tube is placed in their back to allow for continuous CSF drainage . They are evaluated by neurosurgery, neuropsychology, physical therapy and radiology throughout their stay. The NPH Committee reviews these assessments ( to determine individual treatment plans? ).
Patients will find that Dr. St. Louis' experience in the field of neurosurgery, innovative insights on patient care, and compassionate spirit will guide them through their treatment and participation in the NPH Program. If you suspect that you or a loved one may have NPH, we hope that you will feel comfortable contacting us.
